Riyadh: Saudi Minister of Health Fahd Al-Jalajel announced on Sunday that the Ministry of Health administered over 1.3 million medical services to pilgrims during the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage. Unfortunately, the pilgrimage saw 1,301 fatalities, mainly due to heat stroke. Of these, 83% were unauthorized pilgrims who suffered prolonged exposure to direct sunlight without sufficient shelter or provisions. The deceased included several elderly and chronically ill pilgrims.
In his media statement, Al-Jalajel confirmed that there were no outbreaks of epidemics or widespread diseases among the pilgrims this Hajj season. He praised the ministry’s successful health management plan, which included approximately 1.3 million preventive services such as early detection, vaccinations, and medical care upon arrival.
This achievement was the result of collaborative efforts between the health system and Hajj security forces. Notably, the health system provided over 465,000 specialized treatment services, with 141,000 services given to individuals without official Hajj permits.
The minister assured that despite the challenging high temperatures at the Holy Sites, the overall health conditions among pilgrims remained stable. He emphasized the positive outcomes resulting from prompt responses by health authorities and effective support from Hajj security forces in managing and mitigating potential risks.
